Low Porosity Hair
Low porosity hair is one of the three main porosity types and is defined by a very tight cuticle structure. These cuticles act as protective scales on the hair’s surface, controlling how much moisture can enter and leave the hair shaft. In the case of low porosity hair, the cuticles are tightly closed, which means the hair holds moisture well but struggles to absorb it when needed.
Some of the most common signs of low porosity hair include products sitting on the surface instead of absorbing, longer wash and drying times, and difficulty achieving volume. Color treatments can also be challenging, as the cuticle layer is resistant to penetration.
How to care for it:
Focus on lightweight, hydrating products that won’t weigh your hair down or cause build-up. Clarify regularly to remove residue and keep your strands fresh. Apply heat during deep conditioning to help moisture penetrate the cuticle layer more effectively. Stick to a minimal routine and avoid excessive protein, as this hair type typically doesn’t need intense repair.
